Understanding Australia's Minimum Wage: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Salary
Whether you are negotiating a job offer, comparing roles, or simply planning your finances, knowing how to convert an hourly rate to an annual figure is essential. In Australia, the standard full-time week is 38 hours, and the formula is straightforward: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax, Medicare, and superannuation.
For example, using australia's minimum wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), a full-time employee working 38 hours each week earns:
$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.88 per year.
If you are paid fortnightly, simply multiply your weekly gross by two. For the minimum wage, that is $1,004.90 per week, or $2,009.80 per fortnight.
What If You Work Different Hours?
The formula works for any weekly hours. If you work 20 hours per week, your annual gross is $26.44 × 20 × 52 = $27,497.60. Always use your actual agreed hours. The the timesheet on this site lets you enter your base hourly rate and automatically calculates annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly figures.
Understanding Australia's Minimum Wage
The National Minimum Wage is set by the Fair Work Commission and applies to employees not covered by an award or agreement. As of 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. This is the legal floor – most workers are entitled to more under their industry award or enterprise agreement.
Award Rates and Casual Loading
Many industries have specific award rates that are higher than the minimum. For example, the hospitality or retail awards often set higher minimums for certain classifications. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. The casual minimum wage is therefore $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25).
Important: When using a calculator, never enter a rate that already includes casual loading. Instead, enter the base hourly rate and select the casual loading option – the tool will add the 25% for you. See our casual loading page for more details.
Superannuation Is Paid on Top
Employers must pay super guarantee at 12% of ordinary earnings (from 1 July 2026) on top of your gross pay. This is not deducted from your hourly rate. For a minimum-wage full-time worker, super adds $6,270.59 per year ($52,254.88 × 0.12), up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Learn more about super and packaging.
Tax and Medicare on Your Annual Pay
Once you have your gross annual figure, the Australian Taxation Office applies progressive tax rates. For the 2026-27 income year, the resident tax brackets are:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on the excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on the excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on the excess over $135,000
- $190,001 and above: 45% on the excess over $190,000
In addition, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The 2025-26 single reduction thresholds (used here because the 2026-27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of preparation) mean that low-income earners may pay a reduced rate or nil.
Example: Minimum Wage Tax Calculation
For a full-time worker earning $52,254.88:
- Tax-free threshold: $18,200 → taxable income $34,054.88
- Tax on first bracket ($18,201–$45,000): 15% of $26,800 = $4,020
- Tax on next bracket ($45,001–$52,254.88): 30% of $7,254.88 = $2,176.46
- Total tax: $6,196.46
- Medicare levy (2% of $52,254.88): $1,045.10
- Total tax and Medicare: $7,241.56
Your after-tax annual pay would be approximately $45,013.32, or $865.64 per week ($1,731.28 per fortnight).

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week in May 2026 – that is about $108,352 per year for a 38-hour week. Remember, this is an average across all industries, not a median for your specific job. See average pay for more context.
