How to Calculate Your Civil Construction Salary from an Hourly Rate

For a civil construction worker on $35 per hour, the annual salary would be approximately $69,160 based on 38 hours per week, before tax and super.

Understanding the Annual Salary Calculation

To convert an hourly rate into an annual salary, use the standard formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For most full-time roles, the benchmark is 38 hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Ombudsman. If you work a different pattern, adjust the hours per week accordingly.

For example, a civil construction worker earning $35 per hour and working 38 hours each week would have an annual salary of:

$35 × 38 × 52 = $69,160

This figure is before tax, the Medicare levy, and superannuation. It also does not include casual loading, which is an extra 25% on top of the base rate for casual employees.

The Fortnightly View

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly earnings by two. Using the same example:

Weekly: $35 × 38 = $1,330 Fortnightly: $1,330 × 2 = $2,660

This can help you budget and compare with salary offers that are quoted per fortnight.

Civil Construction Salary: Industry Averages and Award Rates

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that the average full-time adult ordinary time earnings in the construction industry were $1,985.3 per week as of May 2026. This is an industry average, not a median for any specific job title such as civil construction labourer or plant operator. Your actual pay may be higher or lower depending on your classification, experience, and location.

It is important to distinguish between the National Minimum Wage, award rates, and enterprise agreements. The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage at $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026. However, most civil construction roles are covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award or a similar award, which typically provides higher minimum rates. Always check the relevant award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website or use our pay guides for guidance.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that works out to $33.05 per hour. If you are casual, remember to include the loading when calculating your annual salary. Our the timesheet tool lets you toggle casual loading with a simple checkbox.

Tax and Medicare on Your Civil Construction Salary

Once you have your annual gross salary, you need to estimate tax and the Medicare levy. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) provides the resident tax rates for 2026–27:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income, with reductions available for low-income earners. We use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate.

Example Tax Calculation

For a civil construction salary of $69,160:

  • Tax on first $18,200: $0
  • Tax on next $26,800 ($18,201–$45,000): $26,800 × 15% = $4,020
  • Tax on remaining $24,160 ($45,001–$69,160): $24,160 × 30% = $7,248
  • Total tax: $4,020 + $7,248 = $11,268
  • Medicare levy (2% of $69,160): $1,383.20
  • Total deductions: $12,651.20
  • Estimated take-home pay: $69,160 – $12,651.20 = $56,508.80

This is an estimate only. It does not include the Medicare levy surcharge, HELP repayments, or salary packaging. For a more precise calculation, use our take-home pay guide.

Superannuation and the Maximum Contribution Base

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings, not deducted from your salary. The super guarantee rate is 12% for 2026–27, applied to earnings up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a $69,160 salary, the employer would contribute an additional $8,299.20 (12% of $69,160) into your super fund.

If your salary exceeds the maximum contribution base, super is only calculated on the first $270,830. For example, if you earn $300,000, super would be 12% of $270,830 = $32,499.60, not 12% of $300,000. Learn more about super and packaging.

Important Disclaimer and How to Use This Tool

The annual pay shown here is an estimate based on a consistent hourly rate and 38-hour weeks. It assumes no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

To calculate your own civil construction salary, visit our the timesheet page. Enter your base hourly rate, select your hours per week (default 38), and check the casual loading box if applicable. Questions people ask next

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and a civil construction award rate?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor set by the Fair Work Commission, currently $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026. A civil construction award rate is a higher minimum wage set by a specific industry award, such as the Building and Construction General On-site Award. Award rates vary by classification and often exceed the national minimum. Always check the relevant award for your role.

How is casual loading applied to a civil construction salary?

Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. For example, if your base rate is $30 per hour, the casual rate becomes $37.50 per hour. The annual salary calculation then uses the loaded rate. Our timesheet tool includes a checkbox to add 25% casual loading automatically.

Does the super guarantee apply to the full annual salary?

The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It applies to most ordinary earnings but is capped by the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year (2026–27). Earnings above that cap do not attract compulsory super. The super amount is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional contribution by your employer.
