How to Calculate a Dentist Salary from an Hourly Rate
A dentist paid the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for 38 hours a week earns about $52,261 annually before tax and super.
Understanding the hourly-to-annual conversion
To convert an hourly rate to an annual salary, multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours worked each week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee, the standard is 38 hours per week, as set by the Fair Work Act. This gives the formula:
Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × 38 × 52
For example, $26.44 per hour × 38 × 52 = $52,261.44. You can also find the fortnightly amount by doubling the weekly pay (hourly × 38 × 2).
This calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates or allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It is a starting point for comparing offers or budgeting.
The National Minimum Wage and award rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week, as published by the Fair Work Commission. This is the base rate for award/agreement-free adult employees.
Many employees are covered by a modern award, which sets higher minimum rates, allowances, and penalty rates. The Fair Work Commission’s Modern Awards Pay Database provides detailed spreadsheets of these rates.
Dentist salary and award coverage
For dentists in private practice, the Fair Work Ombudsman confirms that no modern award covers their work. This means they are award/agreement free and entitled to the National Minimum Wage and the National Employment Standards. Some dentists may be covered by an enterprise agreement, which can set higher pay. If you are a dentist, check your employment contract or agreement to see if it specifies a higher rate.
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that is $33.05 per hour. Our casual loading page explains how this works.
Applying the formula to a dentist salary
If a dentist is paid the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for 38 hours a week, the annual gross is $52,261.44. However, many dentists earn more. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 in May 2026, which equates to about $108,352 per year. This figure includes all full-time employees, not just dentists, but gives a benchmark.
To estimate your own dentist salary, simply plug your hourly rate into the formula. For example, $50 per hour × 38 × 52 = $98,800 annually. Use our the timesheet to do the calculation instantly – enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading with the checkbox.
Tax and super considerations
Tax is deducted from your gross annual pay using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. These are estimates; your actual tax may differ if you have deductions or offsets.
Superannuation guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross salary. It does not reduce your take-home pay. The maximum contribution base for the super guarantee is $270,830 per year. For a dentist earning $52,261, super would be about $6,271 per year extra. See our [super and packaging guide for more details.
Using the timesheet calculator
Our [the timesheet is the home page. You type your base hourly rate into the calculator. If you are casual, check the box to add 25% loading – never enter a rate that already includes it. The tool shows weekly, fortnightly, and annual figures, plus estimated tax and super. It uses the assumptions above and the disclaimer applies.

Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
