Managing Director Salary: Convert Hourly Rate to Annual Pay for 2026-27

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super of 12% paid on top.

Understanding the Hourly-to-Annual Conversion

Whether you are negotiating a managing director salary or simply checking your own pay, converting an hourly rate to an annual figure is straightforward. The standard formula is:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

This calculator assumes a 38-hour week, which is the full-time benchmark used by the Fair Work Ombudsman for the National Minimum Wage. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. The result is your gross annual salary before tax, Medicare levy, and superannuation.

Why 38 Hours?

The National Employment Standards (NES) set a maximum of 38 hours per week for full-time employees, as explained by Most awards and agreements also use this figure. Our calculator defaults to 38 hours, but you can change it to match your actual hours.

The Fortnightly View

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For example, if your hourly rate is $50 and you work 38 hours, your weekly pay is $1,900 and your fortnightly pay is $3,800. This can help you budget between pay cycles.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

Australia’s pay system has several layers. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. However, most employees are covered by a modern award that sets higher minimum rates for their industry or occupation. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides that list these rates, including allowances and penalty rates.

Casual Loading

Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate, as compensation for not receiving paid leave. The casual minimum wage is therefore $33.05 per hour. Our calculator includes a checkbox to add this loading automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – let the tool add it for you.

Award vs. Agreement

Some businesses operate under an enterprise agreement, which may set different pay rates. If you are covered by an agreement, check its terms rather than the award. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s Pay and Conditions Tool can help you identify the correct instrument.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Superannuation is not deducted from your salary; it is an additional contribution your employer must make. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, and employers must pay it each payday (the new Payday Super rules). The maximum earnings base for super is $270,830 per year – any earnings above that do not attract compulsory super.

For a managing director salary that exceeds this cap, the super contribution stops at the limit. Our calculator estimates super at 12% on the entire annual amount, but you should be aware of the cap if your pay is high.

Tax and Medicare

We use the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as a proxy). The calculator does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary sacrifice arrangements. It gives an estimate only.

Managing Director Salary in Context

A managing director salary is typically well above the national average. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week in May 2026. That equates to an hourly rate of about $54.83 for a 38-hour week. A managing director often earns multiples of that, reflecting the responsibility and scope of the role.

If you are offered a managing director salary expressed as an hourly rate – for example, as a consultant or contractor – you can use our calculator to see the annual equivalent. Remember that senior roles may include bonuses, equity, or other benefits not captured here.

Using the Calculator

Start by entering your base hourly rate on the timesheet. If you are a casual employee, tick the casual loading box. The tool will show your weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay, plus estimated tax and super. For more detailed award information, refer to our pay guides or reference tables.

Important Disclaimer

This calculator provides an estimate only. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. Always consult a professional for your specific situation.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, the formula is hourly × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super.

Does casual loading apply to the hourly rate?

Yes, if you are a casual employee, your award may include a 25% casual loading on top of the base hourly rate. Our calculator has a checkbox to add this loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.

How is superannuation calculated?

Employers must pay super guarantee of 12% of your ordinary time earnings on top of your salary, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost to the employer.
