Understanding Your Principal Salary Victoria: From Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Casual Loading and Super

For a full-time worker on 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.

Converting Hourly Pay to Annual Salary in Victoria

When you receive an hourly rate offer or a salary figure, understanding how they compare is essential. In Australia, the standard method to estimate annual gross pay is to multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. This article explains the conversion, the role of casual loading, and how superannuation is paid on top. We also cover the principal salary Victoria figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Fair Work Commission.

The Basic Formula

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52.

This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. For a full-time employee, the typical week is 38 hours. If your role is different, adjust the hours accordingly. For example, a part-time worker on 20 hours per week would use 20 in the formula.

To see the fortnightly amount, simply multiply your weekly pay by 2. Weekly pay is hourly rate × hours per week. Fortnightly pay is helpful for budgeting if you are paid every two weeks.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage. From 1 July 2026, the minimum is $26.44 per hour, which gives a weekly wage of $1,004.90 for 38 hours. Many employees are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that set higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for each award. Always check the correct classification for your job.

If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base rate. For the minimum wage, that is $33.05 per hour. Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and then check a box to add the 25% casual loading automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes loading.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Superannuation is not deducted from your salary; it is paid by your employer on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12%. The Australian Taxation Office sets a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is calculated on your ordinary time earnings, which includes your base hourly rate but not overtime or casual loading (though loading may be included for some awards). For a full-time worker on the minimum wage, the annual super contribution would be $6,269.45 (12% of $52,245.44).

Principal Salary Victoria: ABS Averages

The ABS publishes Average Weekly Earnings. For Victoria, full-time adult ordinary time earnings in May 2026 were $2,041.10 per week. This is an average across all industries and occupations, not a median for any specific job. When considering your principal salary Victoria, remember that your actual rate may differ based on your role, experience, and award. The national full-time average was $2,083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil up to $18,200
  • 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners (using 2025–26 single thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). Our take-home pay estimator can help you see what you might receive after tax, but it does not account for HELP loans, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Using the Timesheet

Our the timesheet is the home page where you type your base hourly rate. The calculator then shows your weekly, fortnightly, monthly, and annual gross pay based on 38 hours per week. A checkbox adds 25% casual loading. The results include an estimate of super (12% on top) and tax using the 2026–27 rates. Remember that this is an estimate only. For precise figures, consult your employer or a tax professional.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your annual gross pay before tax and super. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, annual gross is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. Super is paid on top of this amount.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for entitlements like paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 + 25%). When using our timesheet, you enter your base hourly rate and check the casual loading box to add 25% automatically. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading.

How is superannuation calculated on top of my salary?

Superannuation is paid by your employer on top of your ordinary earnings at the super guarantee rate of 12% (from 1 July 2026). It is not deducted from your salary. For example, if your annual gross is $52,245.44, your super contribution would be $6,269.45 (12% of $52,245.44), but only up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not included in your take-home pay.
