Understanding Social Work Salary: From Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Casual Loading and Super

For a full-time social worker on 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.

Understanding Your Hourly Rate and Annual Salary

When you're offered an hourly rate or a salary, the first step is to compare them fairly. The standard formula for converting an hourly rate to annual gross pay is:

Hourly rate × hours per week × 52

We assume a full-time week of 38 ordinary hours, which is the standard under most modern awards and the National Minimum Wage. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. For a full-time employee:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.88 per year (before tax and super)

If you are a casual employee, you also receive a 25% casual loading on top of the base rate. That gives:

$26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour (casual rate) $33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,318.80 per year

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. For 2026-27, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. So your total remuneration package includes super, but it is not part of your take-home pay.

Social Work Salary Under the SCHADS Award

Most social workers in Australia are covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (the SCHADS Award). This award sets minimum pay rates for different classification levels, from entry-level to senior roles. The Fair Work Commission's Modern Awards Pay Database contains the official minimum rates, and the Fair Work Ombudsman publishes easy-to-read pay guides for each award.

From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%. This means a social work salary under the SCHADS Award also rose. For example, a Social and Community Services employee at Level 1 pay point 1 might have a base hourly rate higher than the National Minimum Wage. To find your exact rate, refer to the pay guides on the Fair Work Ombudsman website or use the minimum wage reference on this site.

When calculating your annual social work salary, always start with your base hourly rate from the award or your enterprise agreement. If you are casual, add the 25% loading. Then multiply by 38 hours and 52 weeks. Remember that penalty rates, allowances, and overtime are not included in this basic estimate.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

Casual Loading

The 25% casual loading compensates casual employees for the lack of paid leave (annual leave, personal leave) and other entitlements that permanent employees receive. It is applied on top of the base hourly rate. On this site, the timesheet calculator has a checkbox to add casual loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading – the calculator adds it for you.

Superannuation

Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings, including any casual loading. For 2026-27, the super guarantee is 12%. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year, meaning super is only required on earnings up to that amount. If your annual ordinary earnings exceed that, your employer does not have to pay super on the excess.

For a casual social worker earning $33.05 per hour (including loading), the super contribution would be:

$33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,318.80 (ordinary earnings) Super at 12% = $7,838.26 per year (paid on top)

Total remuneration = $65,318.80 + $7,838.26 = $73,157.06

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Your take-home pay depends on your total taxable income and the tax rates for 2026-27. The resident tax brackets are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% for each dollar over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% for each dollar over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% for each dollar over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: 45% for each dollar over $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (based on 2025-26 single reduction thresholds, as 2026-27 thresholds were not confirmed).

For a full-time social worker on the National Minimum Wage ($52,254.88 annual), the estimated tax would be around $5,092 plus Medicare, giving a take-home pay of roughly $46,000 per year. Use the take-home pay page on this site for a detailed estimate.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For example:

Weekly pay (National Minimum Wage, full-time) = $1,004.90 Fortnightly gross = $2,009.80

Then subtract tax and Medicare to get your net pay. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is paid separately by your employer.

Key Distinctions

  • National Minimum Wage: $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026). Applies to award/agreement-free employees.
  • Award rates: Higher than the National Minimum Wage for most classifications, including social workers under the SCHADS Award.
  • Casual loading: 25% on top of the base rate.
  • Super: 12% paid on top of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base.

Always check your specific award or enterprise agreement for the exact rate. The reference tables on this site can help you compare different pay points.

Final Note

This estimate assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It is a starting point for understanding your social work salary. For a personalised calculation, use the timesheet on the home page and adjust for your actual hours and loading.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
