Project Manager Salary: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay in Australia
For a project manager earning $60 per hour, the annual gross pay is approximately $118,560 based on 38 hours per week, with super of 12% paid on top.
Understanding Your Project Manager Salary: Hourly to Annual
If you're negotiating a project manager salary or comparing job offers, you'll often see an hourly rate but need to understand the full annual picture. This guide explains how to convert an hourly rate to annual pay using the standard 38-hour week, and what that means for your take-home pay, tax, and superannuation.
The Basic Formula
The standard conversion is straightforward:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
For a full-time employee, we assume 38 hours per week (the ordinary hours under most awards and the National Employment Standards). For example, a project manager earning $60 per hour would have:
$60 × 38 × 52 = $118,560 per year
This is the gross amount before tax and before any super contributions. It assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances. If you work fewer or more hours, adjust accordingly.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2:
- Weekly pay: $60 × 38 = $2,280
- Fortnightly pay: $2,280 × 2 = $4,560
This can help you budget and compare with salary offers that are quoted per fortnight.
Award Rates and the National Minimum Wage
Not all project manager salaries are the same. The Fair Work Ombudsman sets minimum pay rates for different industries and occupations through modern awards. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour (or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). However, most project managers are covered by an award such as the Professional Employees Award or a specific industry award, which will have higher minimum rates. Always check the relevant pay guides to ensure you're being paid at least the award rate.
For casual employees, a 25% loading is added on top of the base hourly rate. The casual minimum wage is $33.05 per hour. If you are a casual project manager, your hourly rate should already include this loading – never add it yourself. Our the timesheet tool lets you check the effect of casual loading by ticking a box.
Average Earnings for Project Managers
While award rates set the floor, actual project manager salaries vary widely. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week. This is a useful benchmark for professional roles. For a project manager, the average might be higher or lower depending on industry, experience, and location. You can explore more data on our average pay page.
Tax on Your Project Manager Salary
Once you have your annual gross figure, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low-income earners).
For a $118,560 annual salary, the tax would be approximately:
- $0 on first $18,200
- 15% on $26,800 ($18,201–$45,000) = $4,020
- 30% on $73,560 ($45,001–$118,560) = $22,068
- Medicare levy: 2% of $118,560 = $2,371
- Total tax and Medicare ≈ $28,459
This is an estimate – use our take-home pay calculator for a more precise figure.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Superannuation is a key part of your total remuneration. Employers must pay super on your ordinary earnings at the super guarantee rate of 12% (from 1 July 2026). It is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from your salary. For a $118,560 annual salary, the employer would contribute an extra $14,227.20, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. This means your total package is higher than your cash salary.
Using the Hourly Conversion Tool
Our hourly conversion page explains the formula in more detail, including how to handle different hours per week. Remember: the formula assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime. If you work irregular hours, adjust the weekly hours to your typical pattern.
