Median Salary Australia: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.

How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, the simplest way to compare is to convert it to an annual figure. The formula is **hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax and super. For a standard full-time role, we assume **38 hours per week, as defined by the Fair Work Commission for the National Minimum Wage. If your hours differ, use your actual weekly hours.

The 38-Hour Week Assumption

The 38-hour week is the standard for full-time employees under most awards and the National Minimum Wage. Multiply your weekly pay by 52 to get the annual figure. For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00, your weekly pay for 38 hours is $1,140 (30 × 38). The annual pay is $1,560 (30 × 38 × 52). That is your base salary before casual loading, penalty rates, or allowances.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly pay is your weekly pay multiplied by 2. For the example above, fortnightly is $2,280 (1,140 × 2). This helps when comparing salary offers that quote a fortnightly rate.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. That is $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Many awards set higher rates. If you are on an award, check your applicable award. The National Minimum Wage is the floor. For casual employees, a 25% loading applies, making it $33.05 per hour. Casual loading is paid on top of the base rate. Do not include casual loading in the hourly rate you enter into the timesheet; the checkbox adds it.

Median Salary Australia

When considering the median salary Australia, it is important to note that the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) does not publish a single median salary for all employees. Instead, the ABS provides average weekly earnings. For May 2026, the ABS reported full-time adult ordinary time average earnings of $2,083.70 per week. That is an average, not a median. The median salary Australia would be lower than the average because high earners pull the average up. Our reference tables include average earnings by industry and state, but these are averages, not medians for your specific job.

Tax and Super

Your annual pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 year, the resident tax rates are: nil up to $18,200; 15% from $18,201 to $45,000; 30% from $45,001 to $135,000; 37% from $135,001 to $190,000; and 45% above $190,000. The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. These rates apply to your gross salary after any deductions.

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary by your employer. It is not deducted from your pay. The super contribution stops once your earnings reach the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For most full-time workers, super adds 12% to your total remuneration package.

Casual Loading

If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This loading is paid instead of paid leave entitlements. When using the timesheet, you can check the casual loading box to see the loaded rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the calculator adds it for you. For more on casual loading, see our casual loading page.

Award Pay and Job Pay

Awards set minimum pay rates for specific industries and roles. These rates are often higher than the National Minimum Wage. If you are covered by an award, your hourly rate must be at least the award rate. For job-specific pay, the Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides. Use our pay guides to find your award. Remember that the median salary Australia for your occupation may differ from the award rate. The ABS publishes average earnings by occupation, but these are averages, not medians.

Using the Timesheet

Our the timesheet allows you to enter your base hourly rate and see the annual, fortnightly, weekly, and monthly equivalents. It also shows estimated tax and super. The timesheet assumes a 38-hour week unless you change it. It uses the 2026–27 tax rates and the 2025–26 Medicare reduction thresholds (as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). The super estimate is 12% of ordinary earnings, capped at the maximum contribution base.

Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

What is the formula to convert hourly to annual pay?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work per week, then by 52. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual salary before tax and super. Remember to check your award or agreement for your actual hours.

Does the National Minimum Wage include casual loading?

No. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top, making it $33.05 per hour. The loading compensates for lack of paid leave. Always check your employment type.

How is super calculated on my annual pay?

Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your pay. The contribution stops once your earnings reach the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For most full-time workers, super adds 12% to their annual package.
