Understanding Hourly to Annual Salary: Tax, Super, and Salary Packaging Novated Lease

For a 38-hour week, your annual salary is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks, before tax and super.

Introduction

If you're paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, understanding how your hourly rate translates into annual pay is essential. This guide explains the standard formula, the role of the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, tax, Medicare, and superannuation. We also cover how salary packaging novated lease can affect your take-home pay. Use our the timesheet to enter your base hourly rate and see the annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures.

The Formula

Annual gross pay is calculated as:

Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

We assume a standard full-time week of 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), the annual figure is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. This is before tax, Medicare, and super. If you work fewer or more hours, adjust the weekly figure accordingly. The formula does not account for unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Many employees are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that may pay higher rates. Award rates vary by industry and classification. Always check your specific award or agreement. For reference, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports average weekly earnings for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 (May 2026). This is an average, not a median for any particular job.

Casual Loading

Casual employees are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This compensates for the lack of paid leave and other benefits. On our the timesheet, you can select a checkbox to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). The loading is paid on top of the base rate and is included in your gross pay.

Tax and Medicare

Your annual gross pay is subject to income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The Australian Taxation Office applies the full tax-free threshold if you are a resident. Note that the Medicare levy reduction thresholds used in our calculator are based on 2025–26 single figures, as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this guide. HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. For a detailed estimate, see our take-home pay page.

Super Guarantee

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your gross pay. The super guarantee applies up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year (2026–27). For example, on a $60,000 salary, the super contribution is $7,200 (12% of $60,000). Super is paid into a nominated fund and is generally accessible only upon retirement. Learn more on our super and packaging page.

Salary Packaging Novated Lease

Salary packaging novated lease is an arrangement where you use pre-tax salary to pay for a car lease and running costs. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering the tax and Medicare levy you pay. For example, if you package $10,000 per year through a novated lease, your taxable income decreases by that amount, saving you tax at your marginal rate. However, our calculator does not include salary packaging; it provides an estimate based on gross pay only. Always consult a tax professional or your employer's salary packaging provider for precise figures. The Australian Taxation Office has specific rules about fringe benefits tax (FBT) that may apply.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a 38-hour week at the National Minimum Wage, weekly pay is $1,004.90, so fortnightly is $2,009.80. This can help you budget between pay cycles. Our pay guides offer more details on pay periods.

Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week (usually 38 for full-time) and then by 52 weeks. For example, $30/hour × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year. This assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

Does the calculator include casual loading?

Yes, you can select a checkbox to add 25% casual loading on top of your base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. The loading is applied to the base rate you type in.

How does salary packaging novated lease affect my take-home pay?

Salary packaging novated lease allows you to pay for a car lease from pre-tax salary, reducing your taxable income. This can lower your tax and Medicare levy, but our calculator does not deduct salary packaging; it provides an estimate only. For precise figures, consult a tax professional.
