Hourly to Annual Pay: Tax, Super, and the Salary Sacrifice Car Calculator You Need
For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours times 52 weeks, before tax and super.
Understanding your hourly to annual conversion
When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, the first step is to calculate your annual gross pay. The standard formula is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, this becomes hourly rate × 1,976. This calculation gives you a pre-tax, pre-super figure that assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.
If you are paid fortnightly, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For example, a $30 per hour rate yields $1,140 per week ($30 × 38) and $2,280 per fortnight. Over a year, that is $59,280 before tax and super.
The National Minimum Wage and award rates
The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour. Many employees are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that set higher minimum rates. The figures on this site are not a job median; they are averages or statutory minimums. For your specific job, check the relevant pay guides or reference tables.
Tax and the Medicare levy on your annual pay
Once you have your annual gross pay, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax scale. The first $18,200 is tax-free. Then:
- 15% on the next $26,800 (up to $45,000)
- 30% on the next $90,000 (up to $135,000)
- 37% on the next $55,000 (up to $190,000)
- 45% on anything above $190,000
A 2% Medicare levy generally applies to your taxable income. The 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. This is an estimate only; it does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
For example, an annual gross of $80,000 would have tax of approximately $15,367 plus Medicare of $1,600, leaving about $63,033 after tax and Medicare. You can use the timesheet to enter your hourly rate and see these estimates.
Superannuation paid on top
Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your pay. The maximum earnings that attract super is $270,830 per year. So if your annual gross is $100,000, your employer contributes an extra $12,000 into your super fund. This is separate from your take-home pay.
Casual loading and what it means for your rate
If you are a casual employee, your hourly rate typically includes a 25% casual loading. On the timesheet you can check a box to add this loading on top of your base rate. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading; the calculator adds it for you. The casual minimum wage of $33.05 per hour already includes the loading.
Using a salary sacrifice car calculator alongside our tool
If you are considering salary packaging a car, a salary sacrifice car calculator can help you compare the net benefit of reducing your taxable income in exchange for a car lease. Our hourly-to-annual converter gives you the base figures you need to input into such a calculator. By knowing your annual gross pay and your tax bracket, you can better estimate how much you might save through salary sacrifice. Remember, our tool does not deduct salary sacrifice amounts; it provides the starting point for your planning.
Fortnightly and weekly breakdowns
Many people are paid fortnightly. To get your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by two. For a $30 per hour rate on 38 hours, that is $2,280 per fortnight. After tax and Medicare, your fortnightly take-home pay would be around $1,860 (depending on your exact tax situation). You can use the timesheet to see these figures.
Important disclaimers
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
