Use the Smart Salary Calculator to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is the hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours times 52 weeks.

How the Smart Salary Calculator Works

Our smart salary calculator helps you turn an hourly rate into annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures. It also estimates tax, the Medicare levy, and superannuation – all based on current Australian benchmarks.

The core formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For full-time employees we assume a standard 38‑hour week, as set by the Fair Work Act. If you work different hours, you can adjust the weekly hours in the calculator.

The Formula in Detail

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026, per the Fair Work Commission), a 38‑hour week gives:

$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44 per year (before tax).

This matches the Fair Work Commission’s weekly rate of $1,004.90 ($26.44 × 38). The calculator also shows the fortnightly amount (weekly × 2) – useful for budgeting or comparing salary packages.

Casual Loading

If you’re a casual employee, you’re entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base rate. The smart salary calculator includes a checkbox to add this loading. It applies the 25% to the hourly rate you enter, so never type a rate that already includes casual loading. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate becomes $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour.

Understanding Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage is the floor for award‑free employees. But most workers are covered by an award, which sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award, including the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award and the Health Services Award. These guides list classification rates, allowances, and penalty rates.

Our smart salary calculator uses the National Minimum Wage as a default, but you can enter any hourly rate – including your award rate. Always check your award’s pay guide for the correct classification. The calculator assumes the same rate every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

Tax and the Medicare Levy

Once the calculator works out your annual gross pay, it applies the 2026–27 resident tax rates from the Australian Taxation Office:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37% on excess over $135,000
  • $190,001+: $51,420 plus 45% on excess over $190,000

Then the Medicare levy of 2% is added (with reductions available for low‑income singles, based on 2025–26 thresholds). The calculator does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary sacrifice – it’s a straightforward estimate.

For example, on the National Minimum Wage annual gross of $52,245, tax is about $6,730 (15% on $33,845 after the tax‑free threshold) plus Medicare of $1,045, giving an estimated take‑home of about $44,470 per year.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Superannuation is calculated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. It is not deducted from your salary. The calculator caps super at the $270,830 maximum contribution base for 2026–27. So if your annual gross exceeds that, super is calculated only on the first $270,830.

For the National Minimum Wage example, super is $52,245 × 12% = $6,269.40 per year, contributed by your employer to your super fund.

Fortnightly and Weekly Breakdown

The smart salary calculator also shows your weekly and fortnightly pay. For a $26.44/hour worker:

  • Weekly: $1,004.90
  • Fortnightly: $2,009.80

These figures help when comparing job offers or budgeting. The calculator uses the same assumptions (no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates) for all periods.

Using the Calculator with Award Rates

If you’re covered by an award, enter your classification’s minimum hourly rate from the relevant pay guides. The calculator will then estimate your annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay, plus tax and super. Remember that award rates often include allowances and penalty rates for weekends or night shifts – the calculator does not include those, so your actual pay may be higher.

For casual employees, always check the award’s casual loading (often 25%) and use the calculator’s checkbox. The casual loading page explains more.

Average Earnings Context

The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ May 2026 Average Weekly Earnings report shows full‑time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week. That’s about $108,352 per year. Our smart salary calculator can help you see where your rate sits compared to these averages. See our average pay topic for more.

Limitations and Disclaimer

This calculator is an estimate. It assumes a consistent 38‑hour week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, up to the maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax‑free threshold; Medicare uses 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. For a precise determination, consult your employer, a tax professional, or the Australian Taxation Office.

Questions people ask next

Does the smart salary calculator include casual loading?

Yes, the calculator has a checkbox to add 25% casual loading on top of the base hourly rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading; the calculator applies it separately.

What tax and Medicare assumptions does the calculator use?

It uses the 2026–27 resident tax rates (nil up to $18,200, then 15%, 30%, 37%, 45%) and the standard 2% Medicare levy. The Medicare reduction thresholds are based on 2025–26 single figures as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed.

How is superannuation calculated in the smart salary calculator?

Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of the gross pay. It is capped at the $270,830 maximum contribution base for the 2026–27 year.
