What Is the Current Minimum Wage in Australia? A Guide to Hourly, Annual and Fortnightly Pay
Based on a 38-hour week, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour, which equals $1,004.90 per week or $52,254.80 annually before tax and super.
Understanding the National Minimum Wage
If you are wondering what is the current minimum wage in australia, the answer depends on whether you are a full-time, part-time or casual employee. From 1 July 2026, the Fair Work Commission has set the National Minimum Wage at $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week. This rate applies to employees who are not covered by an award or registered agreement.
For casual workers, the minimum wage includes a 25% casual loading, bringing the rate to $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for entitlements that casuals do not receive, such as paid leave.
How to Calculate Annual Pay from an Hourly Rate
The standard formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
When we assume a 38-hour week (the standard full-time week under the Fair Work Act), the calculation for the National Minimum Wage is:
$26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,254.80 per year before tax and super.
If you are a casual on the minimum wage, your annual gross pay would be:
$33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,318.80 per year before tax and super.
Remember, this formula assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates or allowances. For a more personalised estimate, use the timesheet on our home page.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For a full-time minimum wage earner:
$1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight before tax.
For a casual minimum wage earner:
$1,256.10 per week × 2 = $2,512.20 per fortnight before tax.
Knowing your fortnightly figure helps with budgeting and comparing job offers.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage is the legal floor. However, many industries have award rates that are higher. Awards set minimum pay for specific jobs and can include penalty rates, shift allowances and overtime. Always check the relevant award for your occupation. Our pay guides can help you find the right award.
If you are covered by an award, your minimum hourly rate may be above $26.44. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides detailed information on award classifications.
Casual Loading Explained
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This is not extra pay for extra work; it compensates for not receiving paid sick leave, annual leave or public holiday pay. When using our calculator, do not type a rate that already includes casual loading. Instead, enter the base hourly rate and check the casual loading box to add 25% on top. For more details, see our casual loading page.
Superannuation: Paid on Top
Superannuation (super) is an additional contribution your employer must make. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. For a full-time minimum wage earner, that is an extra $6,270.58 per year (12% of $52,254.80), up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is paid into your super fund separately. Learn more on our super and packaging page.
Tax on Minimum Wage Earnings
For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001 and over: $51,367 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
Most taxpayers also pay a Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low incomes). For a full-time minimum wage earner on $52,254.80, the estimated tax (including Medicare) would be around $7,500–$8,000 per year, depending on your circumstances. How Does the Minimum Wage Compare to Average Earnings?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that in May 2026, full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. That is about $108,352 per year. The National Minimum Wage is significantly lower, reflecting its role as a safety net. The ABS also reports all employees total earnings (including part-time workers) at $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for any specific job. For job-specific pay data, see our job pay page.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
