How Much Is the Minimum Wage in Australia? A Guide to Hourly, Annual, Fortnightly Pay and Tax

Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,270, with fortnightly pay around $2,009.80 before tax and super.

How Much Is the Minimum Wage in Australia?

If you are wondering how much is the minimum wage in australia, the current National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, that works out to $1,004.90 per week or $52,270 per year before tax and super. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making the casual minimum rate $33.05 per hour.

This guide explains how to convert hourly pay to annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures, and covers the key differences between the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, and superannuation.

The Basic Formula: Hourly × Hours × 52

To estimate your annual gross pay, use this simple formula:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

We assume a standard full-time week of 38 hours (the ordinary hours under many awards and the National Employment Standards). If you work part-time or different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. For example:

  • $30 per hour × 38 hours × 52 = $59,280 per year
  • $26.44 (minimum wage) × 38 × 52 = $52,270 per year

This calculation gives you gross pay before deductions. It does not include unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice.

Fortnightly Pay

Many Australian employees are paid fortnightly. To find your gross fortnightly pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by 2:

  • Weekly pay = hourly rate × hours per week
  • Fortnightly pay = weekly pay × 2

For the minimum wage: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates vs Casual Loading

It is important to understand the different pay standards:

  • National Minimum Wage: The legal minimum for employees not covered by any award or agreement. Set by the Fair Work Commission. Currently $26.44 per hour.
  • Award wages: Industry- or occupation-specific minimums set by the Fair Work Commission. Most employees are covered by an award, which often pays more than the national minimum. Check your award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.
  • Casual loading: A 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. Casual employees receive this loading instead of sick leave and annual leave. For the minimum wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour.

Important: When using our timesheet, do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. Enter your base hourly rate, then check the casual loading box to add 25% on top.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Super guarantee is currently 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer into your super fund. It is on top of your gross pay, not deducted from it. For example, if your annual salary is $60,000, your employer contributes an additional $7,200 per year (up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830).

Super is not included in the hourly rate you see on payslips. When converting hourly to annual, remember that super is extra. For more details, see our guide on super and packaging.

Tax and Medicare Levy

For the 2026–27 financial year, resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: Nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001+: $51,420 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The low-income thresholds for Medicare reduction are based on 2025–26 figures (since 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at time of writing).

Our take-home pay calculator estimates net pay after tax and Medicare, but does not include HELP loans, Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Average Weekly Earnings in Australia

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) for full-time adult ordinary time earnings. As of May 2026, the national average is $2,083.70 per week for full-time adults. For all employees (including part-time), average total earnings are $1,579.20 per week.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time job, we assume 38 hours per week. For example, $30 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Remember that this is gross pay before tax, Medicare levy, and super.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and an award wage?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. It is currently $26.44 per hour. Award wages are set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries or occupations and are often higher. Most employees are covered by an award, so your minimum pay may be above the national minimum. Always check your relevant award or enterprise agreement.

Does super guarantee get paid on top of my hourly rate?

Yes. Super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings and is paid by your employer on top of your base salary or hourly wage. It does not come out of your hourly rate. For example, if your hourly rate is $30, your employer contributes an additional $3.60 per hour (12%) into your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year.
