Financial Controller Salary: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay in Australia
A financial controller salary is typically well above the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, but understanding the conversion from hourly to annual using a 38-hour week is essential for comparing offers.
Understanding the Financial Controller Salary in Australia
When evaluating a financial controller salary, it is common to see offers expressed as an hourly rate, a fortnightly wage, or an annual package. To compare these fairly, you need a reliable conversion method that accounts for standard hours, tax, and superannuation. This guide explains the process using the 38-hour week, the National Minimum Wage, award rates, and the latest figures from the Fair Work Commission and the Australian Taxation Office.
The Basic Conversion Formula
The core formula for converting an hourly rate to an annual salary is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks
For full-time employees, the standard week is 38 ordinary hours. For example, if a financial controller earns $60 per hour:
- Weekly: $60 × 38 = $2,280
- Fortnightly: $2,280 × 2 = $4,560
- Annual: $2,280 × 52 = $118,560
This calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no salary sacrifice. It is a starting point for comparing job offers. Use our hourly conversion tool to run your own numbers.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage sets the legal floor for award/agreement-free employees. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This rate applies to adult employees not covered by an award or agreement. For casual employees, a 25% loading applies, making the minimum $33.05 per hour.
However, most financial controller roles are covered by an award – typically the Clerks Award (MA000002) or the Professional Employees Award (MA000020). Award rates are higher than the National Minimum Wage and include specific classifications with higher minimum pay points. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%. For example, a Financial Controller under the Clerks Award may have a minimum hourly rate of $35–$50 depending on experience. Always check the relevant pay guide for your specific classification.
If you are offered a **financial controller salary that is award-free, the National Minimum Wage applies. But in practice, most employers pay above award to attract skilled professionals.
Casual Loading and Superannuation
Casual loading is paid on top of the base hourly rate. For casual financial controllers, the 25% loading compensates for lack of paid leave and leave loading. The formula still uses the base hourly rate – never enter a rate that already includes casual loading. Our timesheet page explains how to calculate the total casual rate.
Superannuation is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top of the base salary. The super guarantee applies to all ordinary earnings up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For a financial controller earning $120,000 per year, super is $12,000 paid on top. This is not deducted from the salary; it is an additional cost for the employer.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Once you have the annual gross figure, you can estimate tax using the 2026–27 resident tax scale:
- $0–$18,200: nil
- $18,201–$45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
- $45,001–$135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
- $135,001–$190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
- $190,001+: 45% on excess over $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with possible reductions for low income). For a financial controller salary of $118,560, the tax estimate (excluding Medicare) would be:
- Tax on first $18,200: $0
- Tax on $18,201–$45,000: $4,020 (15% of $26,800)
- Tax on $45,001–$118,560: $22,068 (30% of $73,560)
- Total tax: $26,088
- Medicare levy: $2,371 (2% of $118,560)
- Net annual: $118,560 – $26,088 – $2,371 = $90,101

Putting It All Together
When comparing a financial controller salary offer, follow these steps:
- Confirm the base hourly rate (exclude casual loading if casual).
- Multiply by 38 hours × 52 weeks to get annual gross.
- Add superannuation (12% on top) if comparing total package.
- Check the applicable award or the National Minimum Wage as a floor.
- Estimate tax and Medicare to understand net income.
Remember that the minimum wage is only the starting point. Most financial controllers earn well above award rates, but understanding the conversion ensures you can compare offers accurately. For award-specific rates, refer to the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman.
