How to Calculate a Retail Manager Salary from an Hourly Rate

For a full-time retail manager on 38 hours per week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top.

Understanding Your Retail Manager Salary

If you are a retail manager or considering a role in retail management, you may be offered an hourly rate or a salary. Converting between the two helps you compare job offers and understand your take-home pay. This guide explains how to calculate an annual retail manager salary from an hourly rate, including the effects of casual loading and superannuation paid on top.

The Basic Formula

The standard conversion for a full-time employee working 38 hours per week is:

Annual gross salary = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For example, if your hourly rate is $40.00, your annual gross salary would be $40.00 × 38 × 52 = $79,040. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. It also assumes you work all 52 weeks of the year.

If you work a different number of hours per week, adjust the formula accordingly. For instance, a part-time retail manager working 30 hours per week would use 30 instead of 38.

The Fortnightly View

Many retail managers are paid fortnightly. To estimate your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. Using the example above, weekly pay is $40.00 × 38 = $1,520. Fortnightly pay is $1,520 × 2 = $3,040. This can help you budget and compare with salary offers that are quoted per fortnight.

Casual Loading and the Retail Manager Salary

Casual employees in retail are entitled to a 25% casual loading on top of the base hourly rate, as set by the Retail Award. This loading compensates for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave. When you use our the timesheet to calculate your annual pay, you can tick the casual loading checkbox to automatically add 25% to the base rate you enter. Important: Always enter your base hourly rate – never a rate that already includes casual loading. The calculator will apply the loading correctly.

For example, if the base rate for a retail manager is $35.00 per hour, the casual rate becomes $35.00 × 1.25 = $43.75 per hour. The annual gross for a casual working 38 hours per week would be $43.75 × 38 × 52 = $86,450. Remember, this is still before tax and super.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. The casual minimum wage is $33.05 per hour including loading. However, most retail managers are covered by the Retail Award, which sets higher minimum rates based on classification. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for the retail industry. Always check the correct award classification for your role.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross salary. It is not deducted from your pay. For a retail manager salary, super is calculated on your ordinary time earnings (the hours you usually work, including casual loading if applicable). The maximum earnings base for super contributions in 2026–27 is $270,830 per year.

Using the earlier example of a full-time retail manager earning $79,040 per year, the employer would contribute an additional $79,040 × 0.12 = $9,484.80 into your super fund. Our calculator shows super as an estimated amount on top of your annual gross. For more details, see our page on super and packaging.

Industry Averages for Retail Managers

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings survey for May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings in the retail trade industry averaged $1,581.60 per week. This is an industry average, not a median for the specific job of retail manager. Individual salaries vary based on experience, location, and employer. For a more tailored estimate, use your own hourly rate or salary offer.

For comparison, the ABS reported that all employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. Full-time adult ordinary time across all industries averaged $2,083.70 per week.

Tax on Your Retail Manager Salary

Once you have your annual gross salary, you can estimate your tax using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus a Medicare levy of 2% (generally). The thresholds for the Medicare levy reduction for singles are based on 2025–26 figures as the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. Our take-home pay calculator can help you estimate your net pay after tax and Medicare.

Example Tax Calculation

For a retail manager earning $79,040 per year:

  • Tax on first $18,200: $0
  • Tax on next $26,800 (from $18,201 to $45,000): $26,800 × 0.15 = $4,020
  • Tax on remaining $34,040 (from $45,001 to $79,040): $34,040 × 0.30 = $10,212
  • Total tax: $4,020 + $10,212 = $14,232
  • Medicare levy: $79,040 × 0.02 = $1,580.80
  • Total tax and Medicare: $15,812.80
  • Net annual pay: $79,040 – $15,812.80 = $63,227.20

This is an estimate only. Your actual tax may differ if you have deductions, offsets, or a HELP debt.

Using Our Timesheet Calculator

Our the timesheet is designed to help you convert an hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures. Simply enter your base hourly rate, select whether you are casual (to add 25% loading), and choose your weekly hours (default 38). The calculator will show your gross annual salary, estimated super on top, and estimated tax and Medicare. It also displays the fortnightly and weekly amounts.

Remember the disclaimer: The annual pay shown is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2027 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual retail manager salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time role of 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52 = annual gross salary. This assumes you work every week of the year with no unpaid leave or overtime. If you are a casual retail manager, remember that your hourly rate may include a 25% casual loading, and you should not add it again.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my retail manager salary?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave entitlements. For example, if the base rate is $30.00 per hour, the casual rate becomes $37.50 per hour. When using our timesheet, tick the casual loading checkbox to add 25% automatically. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading – always enter the base rate. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, and the casual rate is $33.05 per hour including loading.

How is superannuation calculated on top of a retail manager salary?

Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your gross salary. For example, if your annual gross salary is $80,000, your employer must contribute an additional $9,600 into your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an extra cost for the employer. Our calculator shows super as an estimated amount on top of your annual gross.
